Characterizing Complex Human-Machine Systems

A significant challenge for science and engineering in the 21st century is the detailed analysis and accurate interpretation of complex, integrated systems in areas such as biology, ecology, climate, economics, global enterprises etc. We present here some notes on characterizing complex systems, which we believe can help accommodate the issues of human performance and effectiveness into an overall scheme for categorizing complex systems.
